Container Ship Gets Struck For Hours Under Willemsbrug Bridge In Rotterdam
A container vessel got stuck under Rotterdam’s Willemsbrug Bridge for several hours before being freed. The ship was stuck under the bridge, trying to pass underneath it without assessing its clearance. Zero injuries were reported in this incident.
Several containers were struck off the vessel when it rammed into the Willemsbrug Bridge, and the ship was stuck underneath for many hours. Specialist assessment of the bridge is still going on to assess the degree of damage incurred on the vessel.

Rijkwaterstaat reports that at least two containers had been knocked off the vessel in the incident. The containers were empty, and authorities are now striving to remove them from the water so they don’t pose a risk to vessels.
Officials have reportedly shut the bridge off as specialists evaluate its damage. The specialists are looking for issues with the gas pipes over the bridge and electricity. A spokesperson associated with this matter has informed us that they aim to open up the bridge as soon as possible.
This is not the first time a vessel has hit the bridge. Two others, including the German-flagged ship “Monika Deymann,” had earlier hit the bridge in the years 2022 and 2020. In those instances, containers had been knocked off the vessel.
The main issue is that the clearance underneath the bridge changes depending on the tide. It is up to the ship’s skippers to understand whether the clearance is adequate for their vessel to cross over successfully.
