CMA CGM, a global leader in shipping, logistics and supply chain solutions, has announced a $20 billion investment in the United States over the next four years.

The company aims to enhance U.S. shipbuilding, expand port infrastructure, strengthen logistics networks, and develop air cargo services. The project will create 10,000 new jobs and boost American exports and economic growth.

The French shipping giant, owing the U.S. flag carrier American President Lines (APL) has been a key player in the U.S. for 35 years. Currently, CMA CGM operates in 40 states and employs 15,000 Americans, handling over 5 million shipping containers to and from the country annually.

A company representative stated that the investment would modernise supply chains, improve port operations, and contribute to the U.S. government’s efforts to strengthen domestic maritime capabilities.

CMA CGM will expand its fleet of U.S. flagged vessels to support the growth of American shipbuilding and maritime jobs. The company will also invest in new skills and technologies to reinforce APL’s role as a key carrier for U.S. government cargo.

This will help ensure the safe and reliable movement of goods.

CMA CGM plans to upgrade and expand port infrastructure in New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Dutch Harbour. These enhancements will:

  • Increase operational efficiency to speed up cargo handling and trade flow.
  • Improve digitalisation and connectivity for better logistics management.
  • Enhance safety measures for port workers and cargo handling.

These improvements will strengthen U.S. trade networks and help ensure stable, efficient supply chains for businesses and consumers.

The company will establish modern warehousing facilities and an automotive logistics platform across the country. These facilities will enhance cargo security, streamline logistics operations, and support U.S. leadership in supply chain innovation.

CMA CGM will expand its air cargo services by establishing a new hub in Chicago. This includes deploying five Boeing 777 freighters, operated by American pilots to ensure the efficient transport of critical and time-sensitive goods.

The company will open a new research and development center in Boston. The facility will focus on robotics, automation, and supply chain optimisation working in collaboration with leading American technology partners.
