Chinese Vessel Sinks Off Guangzhou After Collision With Container Ship; 2 Missing
A Chinese-flagged cargo ship, Hai Li 5, sank in waters off Guangzhou, China, after colliding with a Singapore-registered container vessel, Wan Hai A17, on the evening of October 25, 2025.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, saying it was informed of the collision, which occurred around 8 p.m. Singapore time.
According to information received by the MPA, Hai Li 5 sank following the impact. The Chinese authorities have launched search and rescue operations to locate two missing crew members from the vessel. Out of the 15 crew members on board, 13 have been rescued so far.
The Singapore-registered Wan Hai A17, operated by Wan Hai Lines, remained in stable condition after the collision. MPA said that all 23 crew members on board the container ship were safe, and no injuries or pollution had been reported.
The Wan Hai A17 has been detained at a nearby port to assist the Chinese authorities with their investigation into the incident. MPA added that it is maintaining contact with both Wan Hai Lines and the Chinese authorities to provide any necessary assistance.
MPA stated that it will also be conducting its own investigation into the cause of the collision.
As of Sunday evening, search and rescue operations for the two missing crew members from Hai Li 5 were continuing under the direction of the Chinese authorities.
