China’s First Cruise Ship Embarks On Its Inaugural Cruise Journey
China’s first-ever domestically built cruise vessel set sail on its maiden voyage on Monday from Shanghai, a sign of the country’s rising prowess in sophisticated construction as it resorts to self-sufficiency in significant technologies.
The Adora Magic City departed from the port on its first-ever commercial cruise around late afternoon for Japan and South Korea. Boasting a mahjong lounge beside a hotpot restaurant, this vessel is squarely aimed at China’s evolving middle class and their appetite for international travel.
The nation’s state media have hailed this 16-deck behemoth as a significant milestone for the nation’s shipbuilding industry and a crown jewel. Its construction had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, per Lloyd’s Register (LR), which extended marine services for the vessel. It is China’s initial foray into a sector that European shipbuilders have long dominated.
The country’s first-ever homegrown passenger jet, dubbed the C919, debuted outside mainland China in December 2023. The complex assignments are essential to Beijing’s decades-long goals to compete with the US and European rivals and reduce Chinese reliance on foreign tech.
Several international providers have provided several of Adora Magic City’s components. The Adora Magic City reportedly marks the start of the country’s inevitable and rapid cruise design and construction development.
