Cemre Shipyard has launched the world’s first e-methanol-fueled service operation vessel (SOV), NB1094.

The ceremony attracted a large gathering of families and friends eager to see this historic achievement.

Esvagt’s revolutionary concept has the potential to transform the offshore wind service industry, accelerating the market’s transition to carbon-neutral and ecologically friendly solutions.

The vessel, powered by batteries and dual-fuel and pure methanol engines, can operate on renewable e-methanol derived from wind energy and biogenic carbon.

The technology is predicted to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 4,500 tonnes per year, setting a new standard for green vessels in the maritime industry.

The NB1094 SOV, measuring 93 meters in length, was built in accordance with DNV classification requirements and will sail under the Danish flag.

The vessel features high-standard accommodations for 124 people, an 8-meter depth, and a width of 19.6 meters.

It is designed with crew comfort and safety in mind, with ample room for recreational activities and a highly efficient work environment.

It also contains a motion-compensated gangway, transfer boats, and a crane for carrying heavy replacement components, ensuring the safe transfer of technicians at wind farms.

Once commissioned later in 2024, the vessel will begin operations at Hornsea 2, the world’s largest offshore wind farm, located off the Yorkshire coast of the United Kingdom in the North Sea.

Ørsted, a major renewable energy firm, plans to supply e-methanol for NB1094, highlighting their dedication to green fuel options.

The launch of the NB1094 marks the beginning of a new era in maritime operations.

In July 2023, Esvagt and Ørsted inked a deal for a second methanol-powered SOV, a sister vessel for the NB1094.

The second vessel will debut in 2026 and operate from Ørsted’s UK East Coast Hub for a 10-year contract.

Esvagt and Ørsted launched a project in April 2022 to build the world’s SOV powered by green fuels.

A month later, Cemre Shipyard was awarded the contract to build this hybrid, methanol-powered vessel.
