Carnival Vista Crew Saves 12 Lives Of Capsized Cargo Vessel Near Dominican Republic
A small cargo ship recently overturned close to the Dominican Republic. Twelve mariners were successfully rescued later on. After the Two Brothers cargo vessel overturned overnight roughly 30 miles north of Puerto Plata, the crew of Carnival Corp.’s vessel Carnival Vista reportedly pulled 6 individuals from the water early on Wednesday morning.
When an emergency alarm was received by an onboard monitoring system, Carnival Vista’s officers, led by Capt. Paolo Severini changed the vessel’s route in cooperation with Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center based in Miami.
Officers on the ship stopped to bring six people who were on a life raft onto the board. When the Carnival crew discovered that six crew members were still unaccounted for, they alerted Coast Guard authorities in the Dominican Republic, who then began a search and rescue mission.
The Dominican Republic Navy sent a request for assistance, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, to its watchstanders in District Seven.
Upon arrival, the Caicos MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter’s crew from the Coast Guard’s Operation Turks started searching the area around the sunken vessel’s onboard emergency position, which indicated the location of the radio beacon last disclosed. They were able to locate the six remaining mariners who were clinging to the sunken vessel’s debris.
Six survivors were hoisted aboard the helicopter by the aircrew, who then took them to Puerto Plata’s emergency medical services.
The mission’s copilot, Lieut. Cmdr. Jeb Slick stated that the weather wasn’t perfect. The tremendous work ethic and commitment to the training of the crew contributed to the safe rescue of these survivors.
It was claimed that all 12 survivors were doing well.
Based in Port Canaveral, Florida, and managed by Carnival Cruise Line, the 133,596 GT Carnival Vista is presently on a six-day voyage that set out on Sunday. The rescue operation did not have an effect on its itinerary.
