A fire broke out in the engine room of the Turkish cargo vessel FG Sevil, tragically killing two crew members on October 31. The incident occurred as the ship was transiting the Marmara Sea from Yalova, Turkey, to Bulgaria.

The 342-foot (104-meter) vessel, built in 2009, was carrying 17 crew members and eight workers from a Turkish shipyard when it caught fire off Sedef Island, east of Istanbul.

Emergency services immediately dispatched two tugboats, KURTARMA-7 and ŞARK, along with an evacuation boat, to contain the fire and assist with evacuations.

Rescue teams were able to extinguish the fire, which was contained to the engine room. Unfortunately, during an inquiry of the ship, two Turkish crewmembers were found unconscious in the engine room and later confirmed dead.

After the incident, the tugboat Sark towed the FG Sevil to a secure berth in Istanbul’s Kartal area.

Turkish officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, and the bodies of dead crew members have been taken to Istanbul for autopsies.

The maritime community mourns the loss of these brave men and awaits more information on the investigation’s findings.
