Following several years of intense planning, the building of modern vessels dedicated to the Canadian Coast Guard (abbreviated as CCG) is set to commence after multi-million contracts were awarded to Canada’s shipyards.

Canada’s federal government declared that Seaspan Shipyards would construct the first six multi-purpose vessels (abbreviated MPV) as Chantier Davie undertook initial work on building brand new Program Icebreakers for the CCG.

For MPVs, Seaspan will receive C$490 million to commence the works on two of the vessels that are touted to be positively versatile icebreaking vessels designed with multi-mission abilities.

The shipyard was given the long lead items and construction engineering agreements following the execution of the basic design review of the vessel in 2023.

The MPVs will be Polar Class 4 vessels, permitting them to accomplish multiple missions like icebreaking in moderate ice conditions and aiding in rescue and search, emergency towing, environmental response, and maintaining navigation aids.

The new fleet, comprising MPVs, will replace the existing fleet of multi-tasked high-endurance and multi-tasked medium-endurance vessels. The construction of vessels is part of Canada’s government’s strategy of renewing the CCG fleet under a C$15.7 billion investment disclosed in 2019.

The government is trying to target 16 MPVs. The MPVs are anticipated to form the backbone of the modern CCG fleet and are part of the more holistic National Shipbuilding Strategy (abbreviated the NSS).

The delivery of the first-ever vessel is slated for 2030, with the deliveries continuing till the mid-2040s.

The MPV assignment will help ensure that the members of CCG have universal vessels to achieve essential missions in the Canadian oceans and waterways, mentioned Jean-Yves Duclos, the Minister of Public Services and Procurement.

With a displacement of about 8,500 tons, MPVs will be 99.9 meters long and 20.3 meters wide and can accommodate almost 50 personnel.

The operation area will include Canadian western and eastern seaboards, the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, and the lower and western Arctic.

On its part, Chantier Davie has successfully secured a C$19.6-million deal to commence working to formulate the initial design for the Program Icebreakers.

The planned six vessels will replace the ageing CCG’s medium icebreakers, which have become tremendously expensive.
