The iconic tugboat Theodore TOO, a beloved life-sized replica of the popular TV character Theodore Tugboat, has partially sunk at the Ontario Shipyards in Port Weller, St.Catharines.

On Tuesday night December 17, the 65-foot vessel began taking on water while docked, leaving it partially submerged in the mud.

Blair McKeil, the owner of Theodore TOO and CEO of Breakwater Financial, explained that the tugboat is “gently resting” on its side and that efforts are underway to safely refloat it.

He added that the cause of the incident remains unclear but reassured the public that a professional team is working on a recovery plan.

Environmental precautions have also been taken to prevent any harm.

Theodore TOO’s official social media account shared an update about the situation on Wednesday, which read, “Ahoy friends! I am resting safely on my belly in the mud, and my team is working super hard to have ship-shape in time for the holidays.”

The message brought hope to the situation and reassured fans that it would be back in operation soon.

McKeil also said that a professional team is working on the recovery process and that the public will be kept informed about the progress.

Launched in 2000 from Snyder’s Shipyard in Dayspring, Nova Scotia, Theodore TOO was created as a replica of the main character from the CBC Children’s show Theodore Tugboat, which aired from 1993 to 2001.

The tugboat spent many years in Halifax Harbour, promoting maritime safety and environmental conservation to young Canadians.

In 2021, Theodore TOO moved to Ontario after being sold to McKeil. Since then, the vessel has taken on the role of an ambassador for Canada’s marine industry, visiting over 20 ports along the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, and the U.S.

The tugboat’s mission includes promoting careers in the maritime sector and raising awareness about water conservation efforts.

Theodore TOO has also been involved in unique activities, such as hosting one-night Airbnb stays in Hamilton in 2022.

Fans are equally emotional and tensed regarding the future of the tug. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston called Theodore TOO “a true icon of the province” and expressed confidence in its recovery.

He said, “It’s sad to see our old friend in such a damaged state, but I’m happy to read the owner is committed to repairing Theodore and a safe and successful refloat.”

Breakwater Financial confirmed that the team is focused on refloating the vessel and ensuring it returns to its mission soon.

“People across the country hold this little tugboat dear, and we will do everything possible to keep everyone informed of our progress,” McKeil said.

For now, the tugboat remains submerged but is expected to be back in operation soon, continuing to bring joy and awareness to communities across Canada and beyond.
