AI Humanoid Robots To Boost Safety & Productivity At HD Hyundai Shipyard
HD Hyundai Samho has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LG CNS and HD Hyundai Robotics. The agreement, announced on September 15, focuses on developing humanoid robots and logistics automation technologies to enhance safety, efficiency, and productivity in shipbuilding.
The signing ceremony took place at Hyundai Samho’s panel factory and was attended by key leaders, including CEO of HD Hyundai Samho, Kim Jae-eul; CEO of LG CNS, Hyun Sin-kyun; CEO of HD Hyundai Robotics, Kim Wan-soo, along with representatives from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE).
The collaboration has two main goals: the creation of humanoid robots capable of carrying out complex shipyard tasks such as measurement, forming, control, and welding, and the development of an automated logistics system using Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).
Each company will contribute specific expertise. HD Hyundai Samho will supply manufacturing data and set up the necessary on-site infrastructure, while LG CNS will provide an AI-driven data convergence platform specifically designed for shipbuilding operations.
HD Hyundai Robotics will develop AI-based motion control technologies designed for different shipyard processes. KSOE will support the project by advancing robotics, simulation, and welding technologies.
The shipbuilder says this partnership will advance automation beyond what current equipment and collaborative robots can do, handling complex tasks like welding, assembly, outfitting, and inspection. This is expected to improve worker safety and boost productivity.
Hyundai Samho has already been adopting robotics since opening its Automation Innovation Center in 2022, including collaborative robots and underwater hull-cleaning robots, aiming to reduce high-risk work and increase automation.
LG CNS contributes expertise in applying AI to physical operations, integrated management systems that use large language models, while HD Hyundai Robotics brings experience in robot solutions and precise motion control technologies already proven in shipbuilding.
