11 Crew Members Rescued After Cargo Ship Sinks Off Jeju Island
On 15 February, the General Cargo vessel dubbed the KEUM YANG 6 encountered a terrible flooding incident close to the shores of Seogwipo on Jeju Island in South Korea. The ship was sailing from GWANGYANG in South Korea to China and was loaded with heavy iron plates when it listed (nearly 25 degrees) close to Jeju Islands owing to a flooding accident.
The Seogwipo Maritime Police Station has reported that the Coast Guard got a distress call at 2155 on 15 February from KUEM YANG 6. The Busan-registered KEUM YANG 6 was striving at sea about 61km toward the southwest of Seigwipo Port.
The Coast Guard Patrol boat was dispatched immediately, and the rescue team reached the scene close to 23:52 local time.
The 11 crew members on the submerged vessel could be rescued by 01:30 am without significant injuries. It was, however, reported that one crew member had suffered some minor bruises while others were all in good health.
The reason behind the flooding hasn’t been determined yet, and the Coast Guard has been investigating the matter.
