Watch: Crane Lifts Truck Along With the Container

Cargo containers to be loaded on ships are transported using trucks and are secured by means of standardised twistlocks.

It is necessary to unlock these twistlocks before the gantry crane picks the container off the truck. Inability to do the same means the truck will also get pulled along with the container when the gantry crane gets into action. Though this usually doesn’t happen, sometimes the twistlock might not be unlocked properly or can be forgotten completely.

(Of course, the period of time for which the truck will hang on to the container in the air will depend on the condition of the twistlocks or else it will just fall as it happens in this video.)

Watch this video which shows a truck being lifted by the crane after it is not properly detached from the container.

  1. Crane operator should have known the weight of the container he is lifting, with the weight indicator crane operator should have guessed there is something wrong once the load exceeds the container load.

  2. The drivers fault for not making sure the container was fully unlocked and the crane operators for not paying attention the cranes at the port I run out of have cameras on each side so the operator can see what’s happening at the bottom when he’s loading and unloading. Clearly this guy was not paying attention

  3. The steevedors didn’t release the locks (obviously). If the container was empty, probably the crane operator couldn’t guess something was wrong but should be somebody down on the pier guiding him
