Only 11 of Germany’s 1,445 container ship captains are female. 26-year-old Julia Petzold is hoping to join them. She’s second-in-command on the carrier vessel Grietje, and is hoping to be made captain within the next five years.

  1. 26 is far, far too young to sail as C/O, regardless of sex. An individual may well be clever enough to sail in such a position, but the one thing they will lack is hard won experience.
