Eoseas: A 5 Hulled Cruise Ship Concept

New heights in eco-friendly marine technology have started to be achieved. Prominent amongst them, is the Eoseas project developed as a joint venture between STX Europe and Stirling Development International (SDI). The cruise vessel Eoseas is expected to revolutionise the future of the marine industry with respect to the core environmental issues plaguing the sector at present.

Eoseas is the result of the Ecorizon program developed in the year 2009 after two intensive years of study and research by STX. The main focus of the Ecorizon program was to ensure that viable alternative source of marine fuels and better technological infrastructures were paved into the marine industry.

Measuring 305 metres lengthwise and 60 metres breadth wise, the cruise vessel is a pentamaran – a vessel with five hulls. Some of the vessel’s other noteworthy specifications can be summarised as under:

  • Powered primarily through four generators – LNG-diesel – the vessel in addition, incorporates solar panels and gas recycling as extra fuel resources for propulsion
  • The vessel is equipped with sails, which help channelise wind energy and thereby help propelling the vessel effectively. These sails utilised in the five masts of the vessel are patented by the parent company STX
  • The tegument (skin) of the ship is dual. This ensures a natural mode of air conditioning within the vessel
  • The vessel has been equipped to carry out effective and productive water and waste recycling processes

The objectives of Eoseas are reduction in the consumption levels of energy and power along with curtailing the emissions of noxious gases to a greater amount.

Accordingly, as per these objectives, the cruise vessel is looking to bring about a 50% reduction in consumption of power and a 30% reduction in energy consumption levels.  As its long-term objective, the Ecorizon program is aiming at a 50% reduction in the use of non-renewable sources of energy within the coming three-five years.

In terms of emissions of noxious gases, the statistical target set up is a 50% curtailment of carbon dioxide emissions, a 100% curtailment in the emission of sulphur dioxide, a 90% curtailment in the emission of nitrogen oxide and a 100% curtailment in the emission of ash.

In terms of the ship’s passenger and crew capacitance, the vessel can accommodate over 3,000 voyagers and over 1,000 crew members. The voyagers get to experience the optimum thrill of being in an oceanic environment without any compromises in any area whatsoever.

Through the ingenuity and conceptualisation of such a vessel, internationally acclaimed shipbuilders and conglomerates are trying their optimum to preserve the precarious state of the marine environment and in-turn bring about a greater sense of efficiency and sustainability in the sector.
