Saving Coral Reefs: A Mandatory Task

Coral reefs are an important presence in the marine eco-system. Lately, coral reefs have been badly affected by the increase in marine pollution. For this reason saving coral reefs is a very important topic that needs to be addressed immediately because of the continuous degradation of the marine eco-system. There are several different ways that can be used or adopted to effectively save coral reefs from becoming extinct and thus save a very major chunk of the marine bio-diversity and marine eco-system.

One of the most important ways to protect and save coral reefs is the concept of marine reserves. Marine reserves are areas in the oceans and seas in which no commercial activity is allowed. With the help of marine reserves, coral reefs can be monitored and observed which will make the task of saving coral reefs easy and more qualitative.

Apart from creating marine reserves which will see contribution not just from marine conservation organisations but also from government sources and departments, there are other few methods that can be employed for the purpose of saving coral reefs.

It is to note that there is interdependence between coral reefs and fishes which will make the prospect of saving coral reefs even more effective if there is a reduction in the commercial fishing activities. Reduction in pollution is also another very relevant area when it comes to the aspect of saving coral reefs. Pollution in the marine areas includes the dumping of plastic and other non-biodegradable items in the oceanic waters which accumulate together and cause major problems to the marine eco-system.

Because of dumping of such hazardous plastic material, what happens is that they tend to choke up the water area completely. As a result, important and relevant nutrients are deprived to the coral reefs and fishes do not get the necessary nutrients. Acting as a chain reaction, the effects of large scale dumping of plastic are very damaging to the continuous existence of the coral reefs which need to be immediately curtailed.

One more thing that is important when it comes to saving coral reefs is the part about buying coral as jewellery and decorative pieces. Since coral is precious, it becomes important that one resorts to buying coral that is only allowed legally to be cultivated and sold rather than use commodities which have been created by destroying something unique and valued.

Boating and shipping is also another area which needs to be taken into account when it comes to saving coral reefs. When one goes boating, one needs to take care to anchor or tie the boat in a place where there is no possibility of coral reefs around for the boat might damage the coral reefs. Therefore immense care and caution needs to be taken when one plans to take a boating or a yachting trip. Lately, merchant ships have also been the reason for destruction of several coral reefs.

But most important than all the above measures for the purpose of saving coral reefs is the fact about getting aware of the threat that these marine life-forms are facing. Only by getting the right kind of information and joining forces with institutions and organisations set up solely for the purpose of saving coral reefs will one be able to make a marked difference.

Coral reefs are not only beautiful but also priceless. Over centuries they have existed and have given the oceans and seas, an enigmatic beauty. It therefore becomes our priority to take care of them and solve the problem they are facing. Saving coral reefs, thus has not just become important, but has become a very crucial job that needs to be done as soon as possible.
