World’s Biggest Warship

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is the world’s biggest warship. It is the lead vessel of the Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the biggest and most technologically advanced warships, named after the 38th President of the United States.

It is 337 m long, 41 m wide, and 7 m high, with a flight deck width of 78 metres. Gerald R. Ford has a displacement of 100,000 tonnes at full load.

The ship is powered by 2 nuclear reactors which drive 4 shafts, allowing it to attain speeds of over 30 knots.

The aircraft carrier has 25 decks and more than 4500 personnel including air wing staff. It can accommodate around 90 aircraft, including advanced models such as F-35 Lightning II and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The USS Gerald R. Ford has 23 new technologies and systems which differentiate it from its predecessor, the Nimitz-Class Carriers.

It has an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), that replaces the steam-powered catapults for launching aircraft, providing increased sortie rates at 160 sorties a day and reduced stress on airframes.

The warship features advanced arresting gear to improve aircraft recovery operations, advanced weapons elevators for faster and more efficient transport of ordnance to the flight deck and better power generation systems that generate triple the electric power of Nimitz-Class Carriers for supporting the onboard systems.

The warship has automated systems in place which has reduced the crew size by 700 compared to Nimitz-class carriers, reducing operational costs and enhancing the crew’s quality of life by helping decrease their workload.

Its defensive systems include the SLQ-32(V)6 electronic warfare system, Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Block 2 and Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 1.

Laid down in 2009 and commissioned in 2017, the USS Gerald R. Ford is the cornerstone of U.S. Naval strategy and global power projection.

Its mission is to maintain sustained operations at sea and support the air wing for combat missions, reconnaissance and deterrence.

It also operates with cruisers, destroyers and supply ships as a part of the Carrier Strike Group. The warship has been deployed to the Mediterranean which shows its role in regional deterrence and its strategic influence.

The carrier completed its first deployment in 2023 and has been a part of several naval exercises which have demonstrated its capabilities to the world.

It was designed to replace the ageing Nimitz-Class Carriers and is quite modern with sophisticated technologies, however, its development was riddled with many challenges such as delays in certifications of weapon elevators and EMALS, jet blast deflectors and radar.

Coming to the cost, it is the most expensive warship ever constructed, with its construction cost amounting to approximately USD 13.3 billion, which is 30% more than initial estimates due to technological complexities.

A sailing war machine at sea, USS Gerald R.Ford, said to be the pride of the U.S. Navy is also adaptable to future technologies like advanced drones.
