Introduction to Graduate Marine Engineering Course (GME)

Graduate Marine Engineering, also called GME, is a one-year course in which mechanical engineering students learn about a ship’s technical aspects, such as its propulsion system, engine, onboard machinery and equipment, including their functions and applications.

This course can be done after one completes their graduation.

DG Shipping monitors colleges offering this program in India, streamlining the selection and admission process.

The fee of the GME Program in most Indian colleges ranges between ₹4,00,000 to ₹7,00,000. Top Entrance exams for GME include IMU CET and AP EAMCET.

After completing the course, one can become a junior engineer and a 4th Engineer after passing the MEO Class IV Exams.

GME Graduates undergo rigorous training and can work in the engineering departments of boats, oil rigs, ships, and other marine vessels.

Some of the best institutes in India for GME include Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy, IMS Goa, and Seven Islands.

Top recruiters of GME graduates include Anglo-Eastern Ship Management Ltd., HCL, Larsen and Toubro, Maersk, Mitsui OSK, Bernhard Schulte Ship Management, and K-Line.

Importance of GME

It is one of the most important merchant navy courses, especially in India.

Students pursuing naval architecture or Mechanical Engineering can get into the Merchant Navy through this course, which has many benefits.

One such advantage is its low cost compared to courses like B.Tech Marine Engineering. GME is less expensive, and mechanical engineers from the middle-income strata can afford to take this course.

The course helps you apply what you learn in mechanical engineering onboard ships.

Why Should I opt for GME?

  • If you want to be an Engineer in the Merchant Navy, you should opt for this course.
  • It provides a foundation for those who want to join the merchant navy as a trainee marine engineer.
  • GME offers knowledge about the technical aspects of a ship needed to become a marine engineer onboard a vessel in a short time.
  • Those who find the life of a mechanical engineer on land boring and want to explore the oceans and seas can go for GME.
  • You can take this course if you have a naval architecture degree and want to make a career at sea.
  • GME Course enables you to acquire skills important for professional growth and success in the Merchant Navy.

Eligibility Criteria for GME

DG Shipping lays out the admission policies so Maritime Institutions can set their eligibility criteria accordingly.

Mentioned below are the eligibility criteria for getting admission into a GME Course in India.

Age: The candidate must not be more than 28 years old on the day of the beginning of the training.

Education: A candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture with a minimum of 55% marks.

GME

Proficiency in English: A candidate must have atleast a 50% score in English subject in their 10+2 exam to get admission in this course.

Medical: Requirement of atleast 6/12 vision or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the worst eye, and perfect hearing. Candidate should not have night blindness and colour blindness.

Admission Process for GME

You can apply for GME in different colleges if you meet the eligibility criteria. After submitting an application form, you can take the entrance exam, normally a computer-based test.

After you clear the entrance exam, you will be moved to the next stage, an interview.

You will be judged on your communication skills and knowledge in the panel interview. If selected, you will undergo a medical exam by a DG-certified doctor.

The doctor will conduct a medical examination, including various tests from ultrasound to audiometry. The most important is eyesight, where vision and colour blindness are checked.

If you don’t pass the medical exam, you cannot pursue a career in the Merchant Navy because you must be physically fit.

After you complete all the processes and clear all the stages of the exam, the college or the shipping company will offer you an admission or provision letter.

Note: There is merit-based admission in the GME Course, where students are chosen based on their marks.

Colleges release a minimum cut-off list each year for the course. Candidates must reserve their seats for admission by providing the required documents and paying the admission fees.

Documents Required

  • Class 10th and Class 12th Mark Sheets
  • Character Certificate
  • Caste Certificate
  • Birth Certificate
  • ID Proof
  • B.E/B.Tech Mark Sheet
  • 4 Passport Size photographs

GME Entrance Exams in India

Though admissions to this course are through entrance exams, colleges such as Praveenya Institute of Marine Engineering & Maritime Studies also admit students on merit.

Some common exams that students apply for include-

IMU CET

Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test, or the IMU CET, is needed for admission into a marine engineering course.

IMU conducts it once a year in English and Hindi for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is an online exam conducted in test centres in over 36 Indian cities.

AP EAMCET

Students take the Andhra Pradesh Engineering, Agriculture & Medical Common Entrance Test to get admission into the best engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh.

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada conducts the exam on behalf of APSCHE.

This computer-based exam has 160 MCQs and is held once every year.

GME Syllabus

The course is divided into 2 semesters, and their respective syllabus is mentioned below.

Semester I Subjects

Semester II Subjects

  • Watchkeeping & ERM
  • Marine Boilers
  • Electrical & Electronic Engg
  • Control Engineering
  • ISM/ISO/International Rules

GME Specialisations

Foundational aspects of marine engineering

The study offers a general outlook on different marine engineering systems, such as propulsion, auxiliary, electrical, and piping systems.

This basic understanding will enable students to familiarise themselves with diverse fields or become experts in one by pursuing advanced courses or working on ships.

Marine Engine Operation and Maintenance

It is a module that teaches students about running, maintaining, and finding faults in various marine engines, such as those using diesel fuel.

This information will enable one to work as a junior engineer on ships with different types of engines.

Auxiliary Machinery Skills

This unit equips trainees with the competence needed to operate and maintain auxiliary machinery used in ships during operations. Without this machinery, ships cannot run normally. These include pumps, generators, compressors, purifiers, etc.

Power Plant Management

The module lays the foundational knowledge about the management of power plants aboard vessels where learners acquire skills necessary for starting, stopping and monitoring main engines, boilers (if any) and generators to ensure safe power generation efficiency.

Safety & Emergency Procedures

One important aspect taught in this course is safety. Hence, students are trained on fire prevention methods and how to respond during emergencies so that their lives and those around them can be saved.

Marine Engineers: They design, build, install and maintain a ship’s propulsion system, engines, pumps, etc. They work on ferries, cargo ships, cruise ships and even naval vessels.

Marine Outside Sales Engineer: They search clients for their marine products, travel to visit potential clients and establish business relationships while managing customer needs and calculating client quotations.

Marine Surveyors inspect and evaluate ships, yachts, and fishing vessels to ensure they meet international regulations and their respective class classifications.

GME

Marine Sales Manager: They handle sales, prepare proposals and quotations, and ensure customer satisfaction.

Coastal Marine Engineer: They maintain, update and operate vessels used for producing and transporting oil and gas from production areas to the final destinations.

Structural Engineers prepare reports, designs, and calculations regarding loads and stresses, select construction materials, offer technical advice, and obtain planning and building regulations-related approvals.

Conclusion

Graduate Marine Engineering/ GME is a one-year course about the technical aspects of a ship.

In this course, students learn about the different machinery and equipment onboard ships, their importance, use, and key principles and applications of marine engineering.
